German literature has a long and rich history. It begins with ancient Germanic epics and poems, such as the "Hildebrandslied" and the "Edda." In the Middle Ages, significant works emerged, such as the Nibelungenlied and the Minnesang.
In modern times, German literature continued to develop, with authors like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller shaping the Sturm und Drang movement and the Weimar Classicism.
In the 19th century, important works of Romanticism emerged, such as the poems of Heinrich Heine and the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm.
In the 20th century, there were a variety of significant authors, including Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse, and Franz Kafka. German literature thus has a long and diverse tradition that continues to this day.
